Sometimes good things happen at work like a reminder that I occasionally need to have faith in humanity instead of figuring you're all a bunch of assholes. Myself included. Fuck you, humanity. But then I met a woman who sort of reminded me of the fact that there are nice people out there and that sometimes, those nice people are completely amazing.
Woman #1 was buying groceries and toys for her grandson who was turning three. Everything was going along swimmingly and we were chattering about how my little brother liked one of those toys and how, yes, it was a lot simpler than that stupid Alphie robot especially for a three year old. Then Woman #1 realized that the person behind her (Woman #2) was buying roses.
Woman #1: Special occasion?
Woman #2: Sad occasion actually...
Instead of feeling like an awkward monster for bringing up a terrible reminder, Woman #1 was entirely smooth. She had finished paying for her stuff by now and said, "I'll pay for the roses." Woman #2 protested of course but Woman #1 went ahead and payed 12 bucks for flowers for someone else. Woman #2 was practically in tears as they walked out of the store in opposite directions, most likely never to meet again.
